How it all began...

As a youngster I was always dreaming. My parents would have to wake me up from a daydream every now and then. The daydreaming would always be about unknown places and faraway areas. I would wonder about how things would be there. What does it look like on the other side of the world? What do people look like on the other side of the world? And what does daily life look like far away from here?

Travel for me started as an escape at first. An escape away from home. Many things were happening at that time and all I needed was a place to roam around anonymously. Walk down the streets with nothing recognizable. A clear space, to create a clear mind. As my curiosity led me to unknown cities I had found healing in wandering around and reflect on what I saw and experienced. By expanding my horizon I was able to put things in perspective and find inner peace. At the same time my curiosity to see more of the world was fed.

My very first solo travel to the other side of the world was to Bali Indonesia. I had decided I wanted to go there and signed up for a volunteering program. Not much later a plane ticket was booked, vaccinations were taken and I was off to Indonesia by myself. All the planning and booking was easy, book some flights, book some hostels and make a rough plan to go by. As I stood at the airport panic kicked in…what was I doing? Going to the other side of the world?! ALONE?! Who does that?!

And I went and it was awesome. I spent two weeks teaching English classes at a disabled school. Two weeks spent with other volunteers from all over the world. Friendships were made and are still there, every now and then I meet up with a friend from Italy, Indonesia or Taiwan. It is true what they say; travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.

It is a gift to be able to explore our beautiful planet. It is a gift to be able to escape our every day life for a bit. It is a gift to be able to see, taste and experience other cultures. Because in the end we only take a small part in this world and there is more to see out there.

Go explore!
